WSJ article: Modifying High-Tech Devices

My cousin pointed me to a Wall Street Journal article entitled "Engineers Modify High-Tech Devices for World's Poorest" (Lee Gomes, 1 Aug 05). The article wasn't very long, but it discussed a few examples I hadn't heard of before, including the Jhai Foundation's "ultrasimple computer" being deployed in Laos and NASA's velcro-closing sacks being used for housing in desert villages. Despite the title, the article isn't as naive is it seems like it should be. It is not purely about "modifying" technology, and it acknowledges that technology alone is insufficient in the face of many other problems across the developing world (e.g. - poorly incentivized aid programs, corruption).
